Circulatory system
Heart facts
Average heart beats is 75 beats per minute.
1 heart beat pumps 70-80 ml of blood.
left side is thicker than right.
right side only send blood to the lungs.
Vocabulary
Heart - pump blood to lungs and body.
Ateries and arterioles - carry blood away from the heart (leaving the heart).
Capillaries - exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide in cells
Veins and venules - carry blood towards the heart.
Wall of the heart.
Pericardium - A covering that encloses the heart.
Epicardium - the outermost layer.
Myocardium - the middle layer.
Endocardium - the innermost layer.
The cardiac cycle - is the repeating pattern of contraction and relaxation of the heart.
Systole is a contractions of the heart.
Diastole is a relaxations of the heart.
(Atrial systole - Ventricular diastole, Ventricular systole - Atrial diastole).
Cardiac conduction system - specialized muscle tissue that deliver electrical impulses through out the myocardium.
Parts include:
SA node (sinoatrial node) - pace maker - irregular heart beat.
AV node (atrioventricular node).
AV bundle (a.k.a. bundle of his).
Purkinje fibers
SA node travels to the AV node located near the septum that separates the two atrium. then passes through the AV bundle which travels down the interventricular septum and branches off into two pathways. AV bundle then splits into large fibers called purkinje fibers which wrap around the ventricles and cause ventricular systole.
