Duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
Duodenum - C shaped, sits in front of the right kidney, connects stomach to the small intestine.
Jejunum - bulk of small intestine.
Nutrients from food are absorbed into blood stream to be delivered to the rest of the body.
ileum - has more lymph nodes and more bacteria, where it starts to empty into the large intestine.
Wall of small intestine.
Villi - the walls are lined with tiny projections.
Microvilli - on the surface of each vili - enhance absorption.
Nutrients are absorbed in the villi and transported into the blood stream.
Large intestine - colon
Haustion - subdevided into numerous small pouches.
5 feet.
Does not contain villi.
Mainly made up of gullet cells (which produce mucus).
Main function is to absorb water (90% of water entering the large intestine is absorbed), 300-400 ml per day, ions (especially sodium) and compact feces.
Parts
Cecum - joins the small intestine to the large intestine.
Appendix - (vestigial), important when baby.
Colon - 4 segment, water absorb thats's it.
Rectum - attaches to the sacrum and end about 5 cm below the coccyx where it becomes the anal canal.
Anus - opening of the anal canal; 2 sphincter, one involuntary (internal anal sphincter) and one involuntary (external anal sphincter).
